Parliament has backed the Liberal government’s retooling of the military’s fight against Islamic militants in Iraq and Syria.
The motion passed 178-147.
The vote was largely symbolic as Parliament does not legally need to authorize these kinds of campaigns.

Part of the Liberal plan – ending the airstrikes against militants in both countries – has already happened.
The air strikes are to be replaced by what Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has called an expanded mission focused on training local security forces and helping to rebuild the shattered region.

Peace talks are scheduled to resume in Geneva this week aimed at ending the war in Syria.
