SASKATOON – An assault charge has been dropped against a Saskatoon police officer accused of punching a referee last year during a recreational hockey game he was playing in.
RCMP laid the charge against Joseph Jorgenson, 44, in March 2011 after an incident at Jemini Arena, located just south of Saskatoon.
“The referee was punched several times in the face and neck,” said Eric Olauson, head referee for the Adult Safe Hockey League.
“This is an unfortunate incident that in my 26 years of officiating I have never seen before.”

The victim chose to deal with the incident through mediation instead of the courts, Olauson said. Once mediation was complete, the charge could officially be dropped.
“As part of the mediation, Mr. Jorgenson had to admit guilt to the assault,” Olauson said.
Jorgenson and the victim agreed on a resolution after a series of meetings and discussions, but Olauson and Saskatoon Community Mediation Services said the resolution is confidential.
Possibilities for resolutions can include apology letters, community service hours, restitution, or donating to a charity in the victim’s name.
Olauson said the league is satisfied with the outcome and the decision to go through mediation.
“Anytime that we can save resources and save court time, it’s a plus. It does send a message that there’s a consequence to every action.”
Jorgenson is banned from playing in the ASHL for life.
