TORONTO — A massive house fire in Markham saw six people taken to hospital and a dozen houses in the area evacuated on Tuesday.

York Regional Police said only one house was involved in the blaze, near McCowan Road and Steeles Avenue East, but about a dozen neighbouring homes were being evacuated as a precaution.

York Region Paramedics transported five people to local hospital and one to a trauma centre, but could not confirm the patients ages or injuries. Police said three of the victims were children.

Douglas Haig Drive was closed in the area as fire crews attended the scene. Police described the damage to the house as a “complete loss” and it appeared completely engulfed in flames before firefighters extinguished the blaze.

Police said the remaining occupants were all accounted for. Markham fire officials would not comment on the alarm level of the fire.
