Escaped horse struck and killed by car north of Toronto

EAST GWILLIMBURY, Ont. – Police say one horse is dead after making it out of its stable in East Gwillimbury, Ont.

York Regional Police Sgt. Andy Pattenden says the horse was among eight that left the stables at the Royal Canadian Riding Academy early Tuesday morning.

One of the horses was struck by a car around 2 a.m. and later died of its injuries.

Pattenden says the vehicle was totalled in the crash, but the driver was unharmed.

The remaining seven horses have been located and are now safely back in their stable.

Pattenden says no charges are expected.
