Nova Star Cruises officially bankrupt, owes more than $15M

Nova Star Cruises, the company that ran the troublesome Nova Star Ferry, is now officially belly up.

The Canadian bankruptcy firm Deloitte posted the notification Wednesday, saying it was effective April 13.

Nova Star Cruises operated the Yarmouth to Maine ferry service for more than two years.

The company received almost $40 million in operating and startup costs from the province of Nova Scotia.

The province dropped Nova Star, though, after passenger numbers declined, awarding the new contract to Bay Ferries.

After the province announced it would no longer be dealing with Nova Star, several businesses came forward claiming they were owed hundreds of thousands of dollars from the ferry company.

Nova Star is left with more than $15 million of debt owed to its creditors.

A meeting with the company’s 216 creditors is scheduled for May 4 in Yarmouth.
