Edmonton residents in for a big hike in property taxes

EDMONTON — Edmonton homeowners will experience a 4.1 per cent increase in property taxes this year, and non-residential properties will see a 2.1 per cent increase.

The 2016 property tax rates were set Thursday by city council.

An average house valued at $408,000 will pay $3,265 in property taxes. Of that, $2,302 will go towards municipal programs and services and $963 towards the provincial educational tax.

Property taxes help pay for a range of services including emergency services, roadway maintenance and public transit.

The increase is partly due to a lack of MSI funding the city was hoping to get from the province.

Tax notices will be mailed out May 24, with the deadline to pay being June 30.
