Charges have been upgraded after the death of a woman who was injured in a northern Saskatchewan assault. It happened on April 24 on the Red Earth First Nation.

According to police, 22-year-old Alyssa Nawakayas was found outside a home and in need of medical assistance. She was taken to Nipawin Hospital and then airlifted to a Saskatoon hospital for treatment.

Caleb Head, 25, who was originally charged with attempted murder, is now facing a second-degree murder charge.

He was scheduled to appear Wednesday in Nipawin provincial court.

Mounties say Nawakayas and Head were known to each other.
