With just months to go before Rogers Place opens in downtown Edmonton, the arena is facing a funding shortfall, and it’s money the City of Edmonton will have to make up.
When the project was approved, the city had hoped to secure $32-million in grants from the province. The money was earmarked to pay for a portion of both the main arena and the community rink.

However, the provincial funds never came through. Now, Edmonton city council is being asked to borrow the missing $32 million, which would be paid back through the Community Revitalization Levy.
City council is set to debate the issue next week.

Rogers Place is scheduled to open in September.
