7 charged in 2015 Pelican Narrows, Sask. death heading to trial next spring

It will be next spring before five men and two male youths in northern Saskatchewan face trial for last year’s death of a man who was injured in a fight.

Hilliard Sewap Junior, who was 17, died of a severe concussion after what the Crown says was a fight involving two different groups in Pelican Narrows in May 2015.

A prosecutor says there was a chase and that some people who took part in the altercation allegedly carried large pieces of lumber.

Robbie Custer, Cody Custer, Marcus Sewap, Brandon McCallum and Trevor Charles, along with the youths, are charged with second-degree murder.

The youth cannot be named under provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

What is expected to be a lengthy judge-and-jury trial is set to start May 8, 2017.
