Montreal family in limbo after fighting with city officials over bed bug infestation

Kamila Lewandowska said she’s fed up after trying for a month to get city officials to take care of the bed bug problem in her social housing apartment.

“They don’t care,” she told Global News.

Lewandowska said an exterminator came to her unit in Little Burgundy’s Habitations Quesnel-Coursol Wednesday, but wouldn’t spray the cabinets because there were clothes inside.

According to Ingrid Dirickx, spokesperson for the Office Municipal d’Habitation de Montréal (OMHM), the municipal agency that deals with social housing, there is a process that must be respected.

While she said she couldn’t comment on individual cases, Dirickx said tenants need to prepare their units for the exterminator.

According to the OMHM, there are 23,000 social housing units in Montreal; the organization had more than 5,000 reports of bed bugs last year.

Lewandowska said she’s hoping for a transfer if the problem can’t be resolved.

“I would like to actually see them do their job properly and not just say that they will,” she said.

“It is time to do something about it. We’ve been asking for too long.”

The family is now threatening to sue the Montreal social housing board.
