‘It is not really safe,’ resident concerns lead to revamp of Sainte-Pierre Street

Residents in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue got a chance to have their say Thursday about roadwork taking place in their city.

A public meeting was held at the Harpell Centre to discuss the project to revamp Saint-Pierre Street, near Highway 20, in order to make the area safer.

“It is not really safe, cars can’t see us and it is difficult to get cars to slow down,” City Councillor Ryan Young told Global News Thursday.

Young pointed out residents have been complaining for years about safety on Saint-Pierre Street.

They argue it isn’t always clear where cars are supposed to go as they try to get on or off the highway.

The city’s plan is to narrow the road and move the crosswalks so they’re closer together to make it easier for motorists to see pedestrians at the busy intersection.

“The way it is built now isn’t optimal, so we’re glad that we are finally going to make it safer for pedestrians,” said Mayor Paola Hawa.

Work is expected to start in a couple of weeks.

Officials added they do have a plan to deal with traffic during construction and that alternate safety routes will be in place while the work is being done.
