Police officer’s not at fault for injury susatined after arrest: IIU

The province’s civilian police watchdog has determined that no officer’s are at fault for a prisoner’s injury in April.

The Dakota Ojibway Police Service (DOPS) made an arrest at a home on the Sandy Bay Ojibway First Nation on April 3, according to an Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) news release.

The male suspect was arrested without incident and taken to the Sandy Bay detachment then transferred to Portage la Prairie RCMP.

The prisoner later claimed he sustained injuries and was taken to a hospital in Portage la Prairie on April 4.

Surveillance video was received from the police agencies and analyzed during the IIU investigation. The IIU concluded that the prisoner’s injuries were caused by an already existing medical condition and self-inflicted injuries.

The IIU is a civilian organization that investigates serious incidents involving police.
