South Africa’s Breytenbach among judges for 2013 Griffin Poetry Prize

TORONTO – South African writer Breyten Breytenbach has been named as a judge for the 2013 Griffin Poetry Prize.

The panel is rounded out by Suzanne Buffam of Canada and U.S. poet Mark Doty.

Breytenbach created the anti-apartheid resistance group Okhela and was a political prisoner from 1975 to 1982.

Vancouver-raised Buffam, who now lives in Chicago, was a finalist for the 2011 Griffin prize.

Doty, meanwhile, has written eight books of poetry and teaches at Rutgers University in New Jersey.

The Griffin recognizes an outstanding book of Canadian poetry as well as an outstanding international collection.

A short list of four international and three Canadian titles is to be announced April 9.

The Griffin gala is scheduled for June 13.
