Northern Ontario beats Manitoba to claim national mixed curling title

Manitoba is returning home from the 2017 Canadian Mixed Curling Championship in Yarmouth, N.S. with a silver medal after losing 5-2 to Northern Ontario in the title game.

Northern Ontario broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth end by making a double takeout to score four points. Manitoba had a chance to inch within two in the seventh but instead had to settle for a single after rolling out on an open hit. The two teams shook hands shortly after.

Manitoba advanced to the gold medal game with a 4-2 upset win over previously unbeaten Ontario in Saturday morning’s semifinals.

The province was represented by skip Braden Calvert, third Kerri Einarson, second Kyle Einarson and lead Jennifer Clark-Rouire out of the Gimli Curling Club.

Manitoba last won the Canadian Mixed Curling Championship in 2009.
