IIO investigates in-custody death in Prince George

The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO BC) is looking into the death of a man who died in police custody in Prince George early Monday morning.

Prince George RCMP were called to Quebec St. late Sunday night after receiving a report of an intoxicated man causing a disturbance.

The man was arrested and taken to the Prince George RCMP detachment and lodged in a cell.

According to an RCMP press release, officers found the man unresponsive during a cell check at 2:00 a.m. Officers initiated CPR and called for Emergency Health Services. The man was pronounced dead shortly after 3 a.m.

Marten Youssef, spokesperson for the IIO, confirmed that they have launched an investigation into this case.

“We were notified of a police-related incident of an in-custody death…we have deployed investigators to the scene,” he said.

Youssef declined to offer any particulars in this case citing that he is waiting to be able to independently verify the RCMP information.

RCMP have also started their own independent officer review.
