A home in the city’s northeast suffered significant damage on Tuesday after an early-morning fire.
Crews were called to the house in the 700 block of 13A Street N.E. just before 1 a.m.
Batt. Chief Stu Laid said flames could be seen coming out of basement and main-floor windows when they arrived.
“Crews put in a transitional attack, which means we put water in through the windows.”
According to Laid, firefighting efforts were hampered due to area terrain.
“There’s a significant grade difference from the back of the home to the front of the home,” Laid said. “Also, the home on the north side is under construction – as this one was – so just very difficult working conditions.”

“We had to pull crews out because the floor was compromised.”
“We pulled all interior crews out of the home and used our aerial ladder on full fog – and basically put steam into the house to extinguish the flames.”
The house was under renovation and no one was inside at the time.
“We don’t know how the fire started yet, it’s still under investigation,” Laid said. “We do have an investigator here at the scene.”
No injuries were reported.
