Mass-casualty training exercise held at University of Calgary on Wednesday

First responders gathered at the University of Calgary on Wednesday to take part in a mock mass-casualty emergency.

The simulated emergency scenario was confined to one room on campus, and included representatives from the Calgary Police Service, Calgary Fire Department, EMS and Calgary Emergency Management Agency.

In a news release, police said the training would help officials assess the institution’s emergency readiness plan.

“The purpose of the exercise is to provide an opportunity to increase familiarization, understanding and identify areas of improvement for response to an actual event.”

“Large-scale incidents can occur at any time and at any place,” Staff Sgt. Jay Judin added. “A coordinated response is crucial in these kinds of scenarios.”

Police said another, larger-scale mock emergency exercise will be held in the summer of 2017.
