Quebec ambulance paramedics stage symbolic strike to back wage demands

MONTREAL – About 2,500 ambulance paramedics in Quebec are on strike.

But it’s a symbolic walkout since they fall under the essential services law.

The strike began on Christmas eve at 6 p.m. following a breakdown in contracts talks on Sunday.

The paramedics have been without a contract since 2010 and money is the main issue in the labour dispute.

Of those on strike, more than 800 work with Urgences Sante, which covers Montreal and Laval.

David Sasson, the chief of communications for Urgences Sante, says all emergency services will be maintained at 100 per cent during the symbolic strike. (CJAD)
