Western University’s latest list of employees whose income in 2015 met or exceeded $100,000 is missing one notable name.
A year after President Amit Chakma came under fire for his so-called ‘double-dip’ salary, Chakma is completely absent from the Sunshine List.
In a release from the university on Thursday, officials note that Chakma chose to redirect his 2015 salary towards repaying funs he received in 2014 in lieu of not taking an administrative leave. The university says Chakma has repaid the full amount, with interest.

Controversy erupted last year when the Sunshine List revealed Chakma received nearly $1-million in 2014 as a result of working through a scheduled sabbatical. Despite Chakma later announcing he would return the money in the wake of mounting criticism, the University of Western Ontario Faculty Association expressed non-confidence against Chakma and the head of Western’s Board of Governors.

An independent report into the scandal was released in late September and roughly two months later, Board of Governors Chair Chirag Shah announced he would be leaving his post after his term ended December 31st, 2015. The report found Shah did not receive approval from an executive committee responsible for presidential pay when Chakma’s contract was amended, allowing him to enhance his pension, and double his income to $967,000 in 2014.
Shah also did not inform board members of the change afterwards.
