London Police Services Board a step closer to two extra seats

The Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services has endorsed a city request to increase the size of London’s police services board by two.

A letter from Minister Marie-France Lalonde drafted in March highlighted her support of the request to increase the five-member board to seven, adding one member from council and another appointed by the Lieutenant Governor.

Lalonde said the ministry sent the application to the Lieutenant Governor for consideration.

The city tabled the request to increase the size of the board considering London’s population is now over 300,000.

The decision would come amid a slew of changes within the board. London lawyer Susan Toth was appointed to the board last month, taking the seat of former police budget chair Paul Paolatto, who’s considering running for office in the 2018 municipal election.

The city’s corporate services committee is set to review the minister’s letter Tuesday afternoon.
