Two Oklahoma police officers proved that law enforcement has a heart on July 4 by allowing Brandon Thompson, 35, to propose to his girlfriend before arresting him.

According to CNN, Thompson was celebrating Independence Day and his birthday — they fall on the same day — in their front yard when police officers arrived. The report says that Officer Bob Lynch had recognized Thompson earlier from several felony warrants out for his arrest, and decided to follow him home.

While detaining Thompson, the suspect made an odd request — to propose to his girlfriend, Leandria Keith. Lynch and his partner, Officer Lincoln Anderson, allowed him to do so.

“I asked the officer if I could propose,” said Thompson. “The officer said, ‘You want to do what?’ and I said, ‘I want to propose to her.'”

A police body camera caught the moment on tape as Thompson got down on one knee. The officer wearing the bodycam can be seen switching the handcuffs from behind Thompson’s back to his front so he could put the engagement ring on Keith’s finger.

“When you’re in love with somebody and you know that you want to spend the rest of your life with them, you just want them to know how you feel,” said Thompson. “I wanted a new start for me and with the police taking me to jail, I didn’t have to worry about my warrants anymore,” Thompson told CNN.

The couple has reportedly been together since 2016 and told CNN they will set a date for the wedding once Thompson’s legal troubles are behind them. Thompson discussed how he was trying to turn his life around, such as coaching peewee football.

The video of the Thompson’s proposal was posted to the Muskogee Police Facebook page, where it’s been viewed over 12,000 times so far.

Thompson’s arrest is reportedly related to charges including possession of a firearm after a felony conviction, possession of a controlled dangerous substance and failure to appear in court, according to court documents retrieved by NBC New York.
