Should Hamilton bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games?

The question of whether Hamilton should bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games will be up for discussion Wednesday at City Hall.

Tourism and Culture staff are recommending council express a “nonbinding interest” and that staff report back early next year on what the requirements would be.

Hamilton hosted the first Commonwealth Games, called the British Empire Games, in 1930.

2030 will represent the sporting event’s 100th anniversary.

The report to be presented to councillors says Hamilton is a “logical choice” while adding that it is prudent that elected officials be “aware of the obligations.”

The City of Hamilton has bid for the Commonwealth Games on three separate occasions, including 1994 which was awarded to Victoria, B.C.

Hamilton’s 2010 bid fell short when organizers awarded the Games to New Delhi, India, while the city’s 2014 submission was bested by Glasgow, Scotland.

Hamilton co-hosted the 2015 Pan Am Games and hosted the 2003 World Road Cycling Championships.

The next Commonwealth Games will be held in 2018 in Australia.
