The Queen’s Gaels are off to a good start in university women’s fastball.

The university women’s fastball league is underway and the Queen’s Gaels, under new coach Shawn Trudeau, started a new season with six games at Kingston’s Garrigan Park over the weekend.

“Were getting better and better every year,” says third baseman Samantha Hartley, a third-year veteran from Oakville.

Hartley says the sport is becoming more and more popular with eleven teams from across the province taking part.

“We had 20 players try-out for the team,” said Josie Wahl. “We actually had to make a few cuts, something we’ve never had to do before,” added the second baseman from Rockwood, Ontario.

Queen’s split their first two games with the Toronto Lady Blues then swept a double-header from the Guelph Gryphons. On Sunday they dropped a pair of games to a strong squad from Ryerson University.

This weekend the Gaels travel to Kitchener to play four games against Waterloo and Wilfred Laurier.
