Ontario’s transportation minister isn’t saying no to the notion that the Hamilton Street Railway (HSR) should operate the LRT, at least not yet.
Hamilton city council voted last month to ask Metrolinx to bring in the HSR to operate and maintain the incoming light rail transit project, even though a request for qualifications had already been issued.
Steven Del Duca says he remains open to the possibility.

“We’re still looking at all the options,” he said.
“I’m open-minded about making sure that we put a product in place for the people of Hamilton and those that are visiting Hamilton that actually makes the most sense,” Del Duca said.

The minister says the province has not dismissed the request outright because it’s a once-in-a-lifetime investment and the province wants to get it right.
Del Duca says he continues to speak with Hamilton Mayor Fred Eisenberger and MPP Ted McMeekin about what the community wants when it comes to LRT, adding he hopes to make a decision in the coming weeks.
