B.C. government still wants male or female designation on BC Health Card and driver’s licence

A Vancouverite’s application to change their gender to an ‘X’ on their BC Health Card and driver’s license has been denied.

Joshua M. Ferguson, whose current designation is male but doesn’t identify as a woman or man, feels let down by the provincial government.

“I expected more from this government. The NDP, in history at certain points, has been a leader for social justice. So I’m really disappointed in their negligence here and their failure to act.”

Ferguson says Health Insurance BC explains the reason for the rejection is because a question was left unanswered – what gender do you identify as?

“It certainly is a poor reflection of the type of commitment that they made to the Trans community.”

Ferguson has hired a lawyer and is considering what the next step is, but claims their human rights have been violated.
