It’s fall reading week for students at some of Ontario’s 24 colleges, including Loyalist in Belleville, but that break might be extended.
The union representing most full-time college employees have notified the province that they will strike on Monday if a deal isn’t struck at the bargaining table before then.
“I hope that (bargaining) will continue right up to the deadline,” OPSEU Local 417 President Grant Currie said. “I’m somewhat optimistic, but I’m troubled by the lack of movement in the management’s position.”
St. Lawrence College President Glenn Vollebregt told CKWS News last month he felt optimistic the strike could be averted.
Today his optimism has faded.

“Quite frankly, I’m disappointed that the Union rejected the latest college offer,” Vollebregt said. “I’m concerned about the impact this strike could have on our students, and the disruption this will cause to their studies.”

In an email sent to students Tuesday, Vollebregt reiterated the fact he’s hopeful that students will be able to finish their courses. He also told students they will still be welcome inside the school.
Employees affected by the strike include professors, librarians, instructors and counsellors. Should they hit the picket line, it will be the fourth time it’s happened in the past 50 years.
