Move over ‘Capital Region,’ we’re now known as ‘Edmonton Metro’

The area around Edmonton once referred to as the Capital Region has a new name: the Edmonton Metropolitan Region — or Edmonton Metro.

“We’ve united our region around a confident brand: Edmonton, please strike ‘Capital Region’ from your lexicon. We are #YEGmetro,” Mayor Don Iveson wrote in a message on Twitter Wednesday.

The board says it has been granted provincial approval for its Edmonton Metropolitan Regional Growth Plan.

The Edmonton Metropolitan Region Board (EMRB) announced its chair Dr. Jodi L. Abbott on Tuesday and even has its own EMRB Twitter account. The board has 13 members from the regional municipalities with populations over 5,000 and will also be in charge of creating a regional metro servicing plan.

“This clarity will make the work of the new, smaller EMRB much easier, while honouring Capital Region Board’s most important legacy for regional residents, the Edmonton Metropolitan Region Growth Plan,” outgoing chair Nolan Crouse said.

“Regional metro servicing is a logical next step for the new board based on the CRB’s success in identifying the benefits of the regional collaboration.”

The EMRB’s first meeting is scheduled for Nov. 9.

On Monday, Alberta introduced the Modernized Municipal Government Act.
