Party’s over for popular Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue watering hole

MONTREAL – John Abbott College students are outraged after the Régie des Alcools restricted the liquor licence of one of Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue’s most popular watering holes.

After citing numerous complaints including underage drinking, noise and fighting, the agency has curtailed the permit held by Annie’s Resto-Bar. During June and July, the bar’s terraces must be clear by 1 a.m. The pressure already has caused the bar to stop its Thursday dance night.

“We had to tell them, there’s no more dancing, those days are over,” said Steven Bracken, the bar’s owner. “The kids kinda ruined it for themselves, you know?”

In a 40-page document, the agency lays down numerous complaints it’s received. One waitress at the bar was arrested in 2007 and charged with impaired driving while she was heading home from work.

At another reported incident in May, police arrived at the bar to find a patron lying on the dance floor after someone had smashed a beer pitcher over his head.

Despite these complaints, local students defend the bar.

“Basically all the cool kids from John Abbott get together every Thursday, go there and get really drunk,” said Connor Seidel, a John Abbott College student.

“It’s good for the college because a lot of kids meet friends there.

“It’s kinda sad that the one place we do have does get restricted.”
