Huge pile-up shuts down Coquihalla Highway
A huge multi-car pileup on the Coquihalla shut down the highway for hours and sent several people to hospital. Catherine Urquhart reports – Dec 19, 2017

The Coquihalla Highway was closed south of Merritt Monday afternoon due a multi-vehicle collision.

According to Drive BC, Highway 5 was closed southbound at Coldwater Road. The road reopened just after 5 p.m.

Four people were taken to hospital and the initial report was that as many as 30 vehicles were involved.

Motorists were asked to use Highway 8 and Highway 1 as a detour.

Conditions on parts of the highway were treacherous with heavy snow and limited visibility.

Heavy snowfall is expected to continue in the area through Monday evening and into Tuesday.

High mountain passes across the province, including the Coquihalla, could see as much as 25 to 40 centimetres of snow on Tuesday, according to Environment Canada.

They advise motorists to consider delaying travel plans until Thursday.
