Muscular dystrophy is a genetic
disorder that affects thousands of people in Saskatchewan each year. This week,
one young Reginan is moving her muscles to help others do the same.
Twelve-year-old, Sara Sutherland, has launched
a campaign called “Swimming to Make Muscles Move,” that encourages swimmers
across Saskatchewan to log their lengths and get sponsors to help raise funds
for muscular dystrophy.

“Well my cousin who is three years old
was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy this past summer, and so that means that
he’s probably only going to live until he’s about twenty,” says Sara.
Each year, approximately 50,000
Canadians are diagnosed with muscular dystrophy – and ailment that weakens
muscle control and movement. Currently there is no cure.
Sara’s personal goal is to raise
$7,000 and swim 800 lengths from February 10 to the 17.
The swim-a-thon will wrap up on Family
Day Monday with a celebratory party at the downtown YMCA pool.
