Guelph man charged with arson after residential garage fire

Guelph police have charged a man with arson following a fire inside the garage of a house in the city’s west end.

Fire crews were called to the home on Elmira Road North near Speedvale Avenue at about 4 p.m. on Thursday and were able to contain the flames to inside the garage.

Nobody was seriously hurt in the fire, but one person was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.

Guelph police said officers arrested a 24-year-old man near the scene not long after the fire and charged him with arson endangering life.

“Through the preliminary investigation it was found that there was some suspicious things that were found,” said Deputy Fire Chief Steve Goode. “[The fire] was suspicious and in fact, lit purposely.”

Goode would not elaborate on what was found by investigators.

Damage estimates are still unknown and it’s not clear how the suspect was connected to the house.

Police said the investigation is continuing.
