SASKATOON – The sixth Operation Hang Up Buckle UP will focus on cellphone and seatbelt violations for March’s traffic safety blitz, which runs Thursday and Friday province-wide.
Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI) says non-seatbelt use and distracted driving, which includes cellphone use, are two of the main contributing factors to traffic fatalities.

Last year in Saskatchewan, preliminary numbers showed distracted driving contributed to 60 deaths and more than 2,100 injuries. Improper seatbelt use led to the deaths of 47 people.
“The use of cellphones and texting continues to be a problem in Saskatchewan,” said Saskatoon police Chief Clive Weighill.
Last month, 422 tickets were issued to motorists as part of the province-wide Operation Crossroads.
