The London Police Association is speaking out against Ontario’s decision to overhaul provincial policing regulations.
Many police associations say they have qualms about Bill 175, arguing it opens the door for privatization of services like K9 units, crime scene analysis and crime prevention.
Bill 175, dubbed the Safer Ontario Act, passed in the legislature last week and offers the first updates to the Police Services Act in more than 25 years.
LPA president Dave Gilmore tells 980 CFPL that once you have outside agencies involved, it complicates how existing procedures work.

“Because there’s no oversight, let’s say a for-profit K9 office is involved in an incident where somebody is injured. If it were a police officer, it would involve a call to the Special Investigations Unit. Under these circumstances, that person is a private employee of a for-profit company and therefore is not subject to SIU oversight.”
Attorney General Yasir Naqvi says the updates to the province’s policing laws will give forces the tools they need to do their work in the modern era.
