Quebec’s police watchdog has opened an investigation into the death of a 28-year-old man who was struck by a car after he allegedly fled police on foot in Gatineau, Que.

The independent investigations bureau said a call was placed to police Thursday regarding a man who was allegedly trying to break into vehicles in the parking lot of the Lac-Leamy casino.

A lone officer arrived and spotted a man who fit the description of the suspect.

The officer got out of his car and approached the suspect, who fled on foot.

A chase ensued and the suspect was struck by a vehicle and died in hospital.

The bureau says 10 of its investigators are analyzing the case with the help of provincial police.
