Man in critical condition, 3 officers injured, 2 seriously, in downtown London assault

London police say a 31-year-old man of no fixed address is facing a handful of charges after two violent altercations on Monday evening.

Officers were called to the area of Wellington and Horton streets at roughly 6:40 p.m. Monday to reports of an injured man lying unconscious on the ground.

Police say when four officers approached the suspect, three were assaulted. Two suffered serious injuries, one officer sustained minor injuries, and the fourth was not injured.

The investigation revealed the victim had been repeatedly kicked and struck multiple times with a metal chair. He remains in hospital in critical condition.

The suspect has been charged with aggravated assault, two counts of assaulting a peace officer causing bodily harm, and two counts of assaulting a peace officer.

The accused is due in court via video on July 5.
