OPP charge Ottawa police officer with not providing blood sample after car crash

An Ottawa constable has been charged following an early-morning, two-vehicle collision in Smith Falls on Aug. 6, the Ottawa Police Service (OPS) said on Monday afternoon.

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) with the Leeds County detachment charged Const. John Dorsch after he allegedly refused to provide a blood sample following the car accident, a news release from Ottawa police said.

Dorsch was off duty when the collision occurred at around 1:15 a.m. that day, according to police.

The news release said the department’s professional standards section is also investigating the incident.

The Ottawa Police Service hasn’t yet decided whether Dorsch will remain on duty or not in light of the charge, a spokesperson said in a written statement.

The spokesperson declined to provide any additional information about the incident and Dorsch, referring all questions to the OPP.

Smiths Falls is about an hour’s drive south from downtown Ottawa.
