A gas leak closed a major Winnipeg artery for several hours Friday.

Route 90 between Logan Avenue and Notre Dame Avenue was closed to traffic in both directions around lunchtime, resulting in line-ups past Selkirk Avenue and Dublin Avenue.

Traffic also slowed on Logan, Notre Dame and Keewatin Street as drivers tried to avoid the area. The street opened up again just before 2 p.m.

Manitoba Hydro said a contractor working in the area ruptured a pipe while using a backhoe.

“Manitoba Hydro is working to repair the damaged lines. At this point however there is no timeline on when they may be completed.”
