Slow melt delays start of outdoor sports in Saskatoon

SASKATOON – The late start to the snow melt is affecting outdoor sports programs in Saskatoon.

The city announced today sports fields will not be ready for the start of the youth season on May 1 or the adult programs on May 8.

The lack of significant snow melt is not allowing proper maintenance of the fields.

This critical component includes the initial melt, thawing of the ground, time to let the fields dry and maintenance to prepare the fields for play.

Early usage could cause damage to the fields resulting in costly repairs and further delaying use of the facilities.

The city is asking the public and sports groups for their cooperation to stay off fields until the parks are ready.

All contracts with users groups will be adjusted to reflect the new start dates and groups will not be charged until those dates are known.
