Elgin County OPP charge elderly man with careless driving in fatal motorcycle crash last summer

Elgin County OPP have charged a 76-year-old man with careless driving after a crash that killed one motorcyclist, and sent another to hospital. Nick Westoll / File / Global News

Provincial police have announced charges against a 76-year-old Aylmer man, nearly six months after a crash that claimed the life of a motorcyclist south of Belmont.

On August 29th around 4 p.m., Elgin County OPP said an SUV travelling south on Belmont Road and turning left on Yorke Line collided with two motorcycles.

Three people were taken to hospital. Brent Austin, a 45-year-old man from Strathroy-Caradoc was pronounced dead. A second motorcyclist was taken to hospital with serious injuries and but was later released, while the driver of the SUV sustained non-life threatening injuries.

Police have charged 76-year-old Martin Poelman with careless driving under the Highway Traffic Act.

He’s set to appear in a provincial court in St. Thomas on March 14.
