Kelowna Owls win opener at provincial basketball championship

The Kelowna Owls are eyeing a final four spot at the 2019 B.C. boys high school championship.

At Langley, the Owls will face Heritage Woods of Port Moody in quarter-final action at the 16-team, 4A tournament on Thursday afternoon. On Wednesday, No. 7-ranked KSS opened with a 58-49 victory over No. 10 Belmont of Victoria.

The Owls should be facing a tougher team in its 4:45 p.m. contest, but No. 15 Heritage Woods stunned No. 2 Kitsilano 81-68 on Wednesday.

Should Kelowna defeat Heritage Woods and advance to the final four, the Owls will face either No. 3 Terry Fox of Port Coquilam or No. 6 Oak Bay of Victoria. Those two teams play at 3 p.m.

In other quarter-final action on Thursday, in the top half of the bracket, No. 1 Holy Cross of Surrey will play No. 9 Lord Tweedsmuir of Surrey and No. 13 Centennial of Coquitlam will face No. 5 Burnaby South.

Holy Cross smashed No. 16 North Peace of Fort St. John 107-67 on Wednesday.

At the boys 3A tournament, No. 2 Vernon cruised to an easy 83-44 victory over No. 15 Reynolds of Victoria on Wednesday.

On Thursday, Vernon will play No. 7 Rick Hansen of Abbotsford at 4:45 p.m. On Wednesday, Rick Hansen posted a 86-71 victory over No. 10 G.P. Vanier of Courtenay.

The No. 1 team is Charles Tupper of Vancouver. Charles Tupper won its Wednesday opener, 73-58 over No. 16 Mark Isfeld of Courtenay.

At the boys 2A tournament, No. 7 George Elliot of Lake Country advanced to the quarter-finals by defeating No. 10 Seycove of North Vancouver 88-78.

On Thursday, George Elliott will face No. 2 D.P. Todd of Prince George in quarter-final action at 8:15 p.m. On Wednesday, D.P. Todd rolled to an 82-68 win over No. 15 Pacific Academy of Surrey.

The No. 1 team is Charles Hays of Prince Rupert. Charles Hays crushed No. 16 Sparwood 119-45 in its opener on Wednesday.

At the boys 1A tournament, there are two Okanagan teams: No. 2 Kelowna Christian, in the bottom half of the bracket, and No. 5 Vernon Christian, in the top half.

In opening tournament action on Wednesday, Kelowna Christian crushed No. 15 Gold River 100-28 while Vernon Christian defeated No. 12 Nanaimo Christian 61-48.

On Thursday, Vernon Christian will play No. 4 Credo Christian of Langley at 4:45 p.m., and Kelowna Christian will play No. 7 Cedars Christian of Prince George at 8:15 p.m.

On Wednesday, Credo Christian beat No. 13 Deer Lake 80-61 while Cedars Christian downed No. 10 Pemberton 62-44.

The No. 1 team is Glenlyon Norfolk of Victoria. Glenlyon Norfolk opened with an 89-68 win over No. 16 Fernie.
