Peterborough woman accused of impaired driving, spitting on Cobourg police officer

A Peterborough woman faces several charges, including assaulting a police officer, following a crash in Cobourg on Wednesday night.

Cobourg Police Service says it received a call around 10:35 p.m. that a vehicle allegedly struck a light standard in the area of Elgin Street West and the driver failed to remain at the collision.

A short time later, police located the suspect vehicle travelling on Frei Street and stopped it.

Police investigated and determined the driver was under the influence of alcohol. She was arrested for operation of a motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol.

The woman was transported to the police detachment, where she allegedly refused to provide breath samples.

“During the process, the accused spat into the face of one of the assisting officers,” police said Thursday.

Jessica Forsyth-Whelpdale, 25, of Peterborough, has been charged with:

  • Impaired operation of a motor vehicle
  • Driving a motor vehicle with an open container of liquor
  • Failure or refusal to comply with a demand
  • Assaulting a peace officer
  • Breach of probation
  • Careless driving
  • Failure to report an accident
  • Failure to remain at the scene of an accident
  • Driving as a Class G1 licence holder unaccompanied by a qualified driver

She was held in custody for a scheduled court appearance in Cobourg on Thursday.
