TORONTO – Police have charged a 64-year-old man with careless driving in connection to the death of five-year-old Kayleigh Callaghan-Belanger who was struck and killed by a garbage truck while walking home from school in March.
It is alleged the man was driving a 2010 Freightliner garbage truck at 3:46 p.m. on March 7 when the vehicle collided with three children attempting to cross Cliffside Drive near East Haven Drive in Scarborough.

Callaghan-Belanger suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The other children suffered non-life threatening injuries.
In addition to careless driving, the accused has also been charged with “turn not in safety.”

In early April, Toronto city council approved a review of its solid waste operations after the child was killed.
Scarborough city councillor Gary Crawford urged city staff to look at everything from equipment, training and the route trucks take in order to prevent such incidents from happening again.
The driver is scheduled to appear in court June 6.
