Police arrest man in homicide investigation at home near Dovercourt Park

Toronto police say they have arrested a man in connection with a homicide investigation in the area of Bloor Street West and Dovercourt Road.

Emergency crews were called to a home on Shanly Street just after 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday where they found a man suffering from obvious signs of serious trauma to his face.

A 43-year-old man, now identified as Valland Spolarich, was pronounced dead on scene. He was located on the top level apartment of the home.

Police said the death appeared suspicious and was later deemed a homicide. Forensics and investigators with the homicide unit took over the investigation.

A 50-year-old man from Toronto, Herculano Pimentel, was arrested without incident and has been charged with second-degree murder in connection to Spolarich’s death.

Police said the victim and the suspect were known to each other and had known each other for quite some time.

Investigators also said Spolarich visited Pimentel’s residence on Shanly Street and “an obvious altercation ensued between the two parties.”

The suspect is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday afternoon.

Police said the coroner arrived at 3:55 a.m. on Wednesday to remove the body inside the home and seal the location.

A post-mortem examination has been scheduled for Thursday to determine the victim’s cause of death.

This is Toronto’s 25th homicide of the year.
