Joseph Yaremko, 37, is charged with sexual assault and forcible confinement.

Yaremko is known by police.

In 2014 he was arrested following a five-hour standoff with officers after he had escaped from a hospital.

He was a prisoner at the time.

Police believe the victim and suspect are not known to each other.

The Saskatoon Sexual Assault and Information Centre said instances in which a stranger assaults a victim are rare.

Its executive director noted about 80 per cent of all reported sexual assaults occur between people who know each other.

“[The victim] was acquainted with the perpetrator and trusted them, which is how they gained access to the victim in the first place,” Faye Davis said. “So stranger assaults are very uncommon.”
