Where is gay marriage legal?

Canada legalized gay marriage back in 2005. At the time, it was the third country in the world to do so. Since then 11 more have allowed marriage between same-sex couples, with France having its first marriage between two men last week.

Here are the 14 countries that have legalized gay marriage (according to procon.org):

Argentina, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Uruguay

Twelve states in the U.S. permit same-sex marriages as well:

Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Maryland, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington, and the District of Columbia

Procon.org points out 36 states have banned gay marriage either through laws or their constitutions.
