Winnipeg police say they’ve taken a number of people into custody after a reported robbery turned into a standoff that closed a number of roads in the city’s North End Thursday.
Police said they were called to a home on Pacific Avenue near Ellen Street at about 4:40 a.m. for reports of a robbery and subsequently stayed in the area.
Winnipeg police spokesperson Const. Jay Murray told Global News the road closures were put in the area so police could “focus on a residence.”
A Global News reporter at the scene said several police vehicles were there and officers had surrounded a home. Police used a bullhorn to ask someone inside to come out.
A witness told Global News she was told someone was in the home and was armed and Murray confirmed police believe a weapon was involved, but wouldn’t say what type.
