The Quintette Mine, about 20 kilometres south of Tumbler Ridge, had previously operated for about 18 years, after opening in 1982.

Unfavourable market conditions forced the mine to close in 2000.

Now Teck has submitted an application for the proposed re-opening of the mine.

It will be an open pit mine, with an estimated 15 to 17 year mine life, and would employ about 500 full-time employees.

First coal production would be expected in the first half of 2014.
