WINNIPEG – Manitoba is abuzz about the possible return of a significant Métis artifact.
The bell of Batoche hung in the Saskatchewan community of the same name when the Métis were defeated during the Northwest Rebellion in 1885.

It was taken by federal troops and eventually displayed as a trophy in an Ontario legion hall before it was mysteriously removed in 1991.
Now, a Manitoba Métis group is hinting it has plans for the bell’s return.

Group spokesman Guy Savoie said there will be an announcement on Friday about what will happen to the bell and where it’s going.
The bell is an important part of Métis history and it should be treated accordingly, he said.
