An unusual fraud investigation with a Montreal twist has been launched in Toronto.
Between Feb. 9 and Feb. 11, a fraudulently obtained bank draft for $1,895,751 was used to purchase Australian gold bars in Montreal.
The purchase included 75 unique 10 oz gold bars produced by the Perth Mint in Perth, Australia.
The bars display the symbol of the Perth Mint, with kangaroos on the back.
Officials say someone tried to sell the gold bars in Toronto on Feb. 14.
Toronto police would like the public to know further attempts to sell these gold bars could be made.
They want those working in the jewellery or metal industry to be aware.
The Canadian Bankers Association will give up to $50,000 for public information that leads to the arrest, conviction and recovery of the gold bars.
Montreal police say they are not involved in the investigation.
