Good Samaritan intervenes in assault on SkyTrain platform, gets attacked

SkyTrain assault.
SkyTrain assault. Still from surveillance camera

Transit Police are looking for a man who intervened in a domestic assault on June 24, only to be attacked with a knife by the suspect.

The whole thing was captured on surveillance camera.

It was about 8:40 p.m. when a woman was assaulted by her common-law husband on the platform of the Surrey Central SkyTrain station.

He hit her in the face, grabbed her hair, and then hit her again. Another man on the platform intervened and was attacked by the suspect with a knife. A second person then came to the aid of the first man and was also attacked by the suspect. He slashed at the man numerous times before running out of the station.

Transit Police say they want to commend him for his selfless actions that evening.

He is described as a black man, early 20’s, close cropped hair, clean shaven, wearing a short-sleeved striped shirt, white ‘vest style’ hoodie and knee-length shorts.

The suspect was identified and arrested at the Surrey residence of the couple the following day. Argelio Mejiadiaz, 51, has been charged with two counts of assault and one count of assault with a weapon.

He is previously known to police, and was released on a recognizance with conditions that included no contact with the victim and not to be within 200 metres of the victim’s residence.

On July 11 he was then arrested for breaching the conditions of his release by being in the company of the victim and at her home. He was again released on a recognizance with the same conditions and will next appear in court on July 19.

The unidentified victim/witness, or anyone who knows his identity is asked to call Transit Police at 604-515-8300 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 if they wish to remain anonymous.
